10-year Groundbreaking Anniversary

Ten years ago today, supporters of the nonprofit Aquarius Aquarium Institute gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for what would become the Fresno Aquarium’s very first physical construction on our donated property along Highway 99 overlooking the San Joaquin River.

When we announced the groundbreaking, many people understandably assumed a building would immediately rise from the ground.
But what followed instead was something far less glamorous — yet absolutely essential.
Infrastructure
Real, permanent, expensive infrastructure.
Over the next two years, donor support funded the grading of the Aquarium building pad and relocation of the entrance driveway to comply with Fresno County requirements and create the required landscape setback along Highway 99. https://fresnoaquarium.org/construction-activity-update/
Supporters then funded the engineering and construction of a massive reinforced concrete foundation for a 35,000-gallon fire protection water tank. https://fresnoaquarium.org/spring-2017-construction-update/
In June 2017, that giant custom-built tank was transported through Fresno and installed on the property — instantly becoming a recognizable landmark at Fresno’s northern entrance. https://fresnoaquarium.org/giant-35000-gallon-water-tank/
Soon afterward, underground water infrastructure was constructed, including a new underground water main and fire hydrant near the future building site. https://fresnoaquarium.org/category/construction/
These systems were not optional extras.
They were required infrastructure needed before Fresno County and fire authorities would allow construction of the first building itself. The water system was specifically designed to support the future building’s fire suppression systems, fire pump and sprinklers.
So why is the building still not completed ten years later?
Because the Fresno Aquarium has chosen an intentionally different path than many projects:
Debt-free construction
No massive bank loans.
No risky overleveraging of the property.
No building something the organization cannot sustainably operate afterward.
Instead, the project has advanced step-by-step as community support has allowed. As the original groundbreaking announcement stated in 2016, the pace of the project would depend on “the pace of support from generous individual and corporate philanthropy.”
And importantly — this decade proves something else:
When the Fresno Aquarium receives significant funding, visible construction happens quickly.
Large leadership donations and campaign support directly led to:
- County approvals
- 35,000-gallon fire protection tank
- Site grading
- Building pads
- Underground water infrastructure
- Fire hydrant installation
All of this occurred while the nonprofit Aquarius Aquarium Institute continued its popular educational outreach programs reaching students throughout the Central Valley
This is a real, physical project:
- Infrastructure exists.
- Permits were secured.
- Site work was completed.
- Utility systems are installed.
The foundation for the future Fresno Aquarium was physically built first.
Ten years later, the vision remains alive because the community chose patience, permanence and responsibility over shortcuts.
And one day, when the very first building finally rises under the bluff overlooking the San Joaquin River, it will stand on infrastructure that this community already built together — one donor, one Charter Member and one concrete block at a time.
To become a part of this exciting journey and keep it moving forward, we invite you, your family and your business to put your name a concrete block today.
