Building an Aquarium the Right Way
Every so often someone asks a fair question: Why does a project like the Fresno Aquarium take so long?
The short answer is that we’re building it the same way many of the great community institutions in America were built—step by step, donor by donor, block by block.
This nonprofit Aquarium isn’t being financed by a single developer, a large corporation, a big government bond or a tax. It’s being built by the community itself. Hundreds of families, businesses, and supporters are stepping forward to help create a permanent place where our region can experience fascinating fish from our rivers, spectacular species from the ocean, and our own unique water story.
When you build something this way, it takes patience. But it also creates something far more meaningful.
Every concrete block to be placed into the Aquaculture Building’s walls represents real individuals or businesses who decided Fresno deserves this. Every membership, every classroom program, every donation—large or small—moves the project forward.
We could have tried to rush this project. We could have taken on debt or waited for a single large benefactor before offering this opportunity to people like you. But that’s not the path we chose.
Instead, we chose the stronger path: build this nonprofit Aquarium debt-free and build it with the community. The Aquarium owns its 10-acre property free-and-clear because that land was donated.
That means when the doors open, the Fresno Aquarium won’t belong to a bank or a developer. It will belong to the people who made it possible.
And the good news is that momentum continues to grow. Every month more families, businesses, and educators join the effort. Students are already learning through our programs. Donors are literally putting their names into the foundation of the building. The vision is becoming more visible with every passing season.
Projects like this are never built by spectators. They are built by people who decide to take part.
If you’ve been watching from the sidelines, this is your moment to step in.
Put your name on a concrete block.
Bring your family to an event.
Help us build something that will serve Fresno’s children for generations.
Great community projects aren’t built overnight.
